The Good food guide 2009

Well-tuned modern food

Cooking SCore 4

Originally built as a roadside inn, the Roade House has blossomed under the direction of Chris and Sue Kewley; two decades down the line it is a favourite pitstop and peaceful retreat within easy reach of the M1 and the supercharged world of Silverstone. Over the years, Chris has honed his culinary style and he continues to offer well-tuned modern food with plenty of interesting touches. Carpaccio of tuna comes with guacamole and citrus fruits, while fillet of pollock is 'blackened' and served with a sunny warm salad of Mediterranean vegetables and new potatoes. A strong classical vein also runs through the menu in the shape of roast guinea fowl with apple and Calvados sauce (albeit with goats' cheese beignets) or calf's liver with pancetta, onion confit and red wine butter. Desserts often have an exotic fruity slant - warm peppered pineapple or ice nougat parfait with kumquats and kumquat sorbet, for example. The wine list is stylistically focused, with attention paid to quality as well as variety. Prices, from £14 (£4 a glass), are very comfortable.

Good Food Guide Score 4

1 is a significant achievement, as many restaurants are rejected during the compilation of the guide. The Roade House has consisently scored 4 over the years.
What does 4 mean? - Dedicated, focused approach to cooking; good classical skills and high-quality ingredients.
